I am sure you have a local lumber yard nearby. They tend to be cheaper than home depot or lowe's, but they also have a wood selection.

What are you doing exactly?

Well, perhaps try a local hobbystore. You know the kind of place that sells model airplanes, and remote control cars etc. Model planes are usually made out of bass wood, or balsa wood, so that may be a place to try too.

*Necro-posts*  I live a few minutes from a paper mill (The lumber mill is across the river =P) but they have a box of free wood.  It's mostly small chunks, assorted woods (it would depend on the wood they process) and sometimes there are nails so you've got to be careful but a few friends and I picked through it one day and came out with a few big cubes and a lot of decent sized scrap.  Anyone looking for free wood should see if there's a lumber/paper mill near by, or see if they have a friend with a big truck who likes carpooling.

For someone who lives in big city, it would be difficult to find lumber mill.

Any kind of lumber store or exotic wood store will have basswood. I bet even home depot carries chunks of it as it's the most common wood to work with. If you really are having trouble finding any just order some online, it's pretty reasonable rates.
