Check page 3 for my newest designs and bags!

Since perfectly flawed has decided to leave our community and move onto other things, I guess that leaves me to make a tutorial.  Alright.  I haven't done a long photo tutorial yet, and I know that everyone is on a different sewing level.  So, if I point out obvious things, I'm sorry, and if I leave out complicated parts, let me know.  I've been meaning to put a pattern drafting tutorial on the board, maybe later this summer.

Here we go!

This is my finished bag:

Step 1
Lay out your pattern and trace your pattern onto the wrongside of your fabric, make sure that the grain is going in the same direction.  Don't forget to put in your seam allowance, because the fabric is bulky and moves, it really helps to have it drawn on.  LABEL EVERYTHING!  I'm not sure if you can see it in these photos, but each piece has it's name, the seam allowance and  grain direction on it.

And the lining:

Step 2
All of your details, ie. applique, pockets, strap, have to be done before you assemble the bag.  It's important to plan out your entire bag before you start, otherwise it's hard to go back and change it.
I started with my pockets.

Pictures of the finished pockets:

Then did the felt face.

For the strap, cut 2 5" pieces of webbing.  Put a D-ring on each and fold in half, and stitch closed.  These will go on the sides of the bag.  Take a long piece of webbing and hold onto it.

Step 3
I then assembled my outside bag (the faux fur).

The one thing I forgot to do on this bag, but have since corrected on my patterns is to cut out a square in the corners, so they will join better.

And then, the lining.  Attach all the pockets to the lining and the two webbing and D-ring pieces.  Then sew the lining together.

Step 4

Attach the lining to the faux fur.  This can be a little tricky in setting up.  You want the fur and the lining rightsides together.  This is where I usually make a mistake.  I reccomend pining one side and turn it right side out, just to make sure you're putting it together correctly.  The D-rings should be hidden between the lining and fur.  You should be able to see only the end of the webbing.  I would have a picture of this, but I didn't do it correctly.  I will post a picture when I make my next one.

If you're making a messanger bag, sew all edges except for the end of the flap.  Turn rightside out and topstich the end of the flap.  The seam will disappear when you ruffle the fur.  Attach the long strap to the D-rings with a giant X.

If you're making a tote, then sew the front, back and one side.  Turn rightside out and top stitch the last side.

TADA!

So that was my technique.  I'll try and update this with better pictures and instructions as I make more of them (I'm working on setting up an online store and doing craft fairs).  I feel that most people who want this tutorial just want it to make them for themselves, or their friends.  They are pretty similar to the jordy bag, just different fabric, so it isn't hard to figure them out without my meager tutorial.  I'm sorry that perfectlyflawed feels how she does about sharing, but I think that if you want to sell them you'd figure it out anyway.  Which is exactly what I did, I put my perfectionist tendencies to work to make quality goods.

I'm almost done with a tote version.  It should be posted by this weekend.

Important question:  Did you prewash the furry stuff?  I'm afraid.  Maybe I'll cut a snip and wash it to see what happens.

I never wash my purses/bags, but I have washed my daughter's stuffed animals accidentally before (made with fur similar to this) and it was a MESS.... when you go to the fabric store the washing/care instructions are right there on the bolt, make sure you check it - the fur for this particular tote may be different than the fur you buy - and may have different care instructions.

I wanna see everyone's bags when they are done, these are adorable.

"by the way...about how much of the furry fabric did you need?"

I used 2/3 of a 60" yard.  That was the minimum I needed so all the fur went the same direction.
My final dimensions are 13" x 9" x 4".  I made the pattern based on a spiral notebook.

"*Did you ever decide on a name?*"

Nope.  Any suggestions?

Did you prewash the furry stuff?

Yes.  So far, so good.  You need to wipe out your washing machine with a paper towel after washing the fur.  Just comb out the fur after drying and it'll be fine.  Again, this might not work for all fur.

Ok people I need your help.....

I made these monster cell phone holders by crocheting them instead (more colors, easiser to work with)

Well I got a lot of compliments and now everyone wants one made as a purse....I am completely willing to do it, but I wanna make sure it's stiff enough to hold up as a purse...

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could use as a lining to make this a stiff purse??
Especially when I washed my cell holder I forgot that not only would it make it softer (which I wanted), but it would also make it looser (which I didn't want)...UGH

So please help, any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated...and if you could PM me would be appreciated too, though I will check for updates on here if you decide to reply instead....

THANKS!!!

ingysoup--that's adorable.  I love the fur and the spotted tongue.

I finished my first monster tote, and am almost done with two more totes and two mini messenger bags.  I just need to buy some more webbing and d-rings to finish them off.

Thanks! Turn both bags inside out and put the lining inside the fur. The wrong side of the fur and the wrong side of the lining should be showing. Stich around the edges, leaving one side open. Turn rightside out, and stitch the opening shut.

Thanks, it was my first photo tutorial.

I've finally summoned the courage to sell my bags. Well, almost...but there's a discussion about that here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=55836.0

I'm giving you guys a sneak preview before I put them up for sale on Etsy.

Another large messenger bag, her name is Purcona:

Mini-Messenger Bags:

And my favorite, the tote bags:

All bags have two pockets. The messenger bags have adjustable straps. The totes have magnetic snap closures and handles which match the lining.

Large messenger bags are $50
Mini messenger bags are $35
Totes are $40

I'm calling the Ferocious Furries, but I'm tempted to go back to calling them Monster Bags. Several of them have their own names, all of them will soon.

Your project was the main reason I didn't want to call them monster bags. I do understand that you are very protective of your bag design, but like several other people have already posted, I did have the idea and the fabric before you posted your bag. It was actually Goldfinch's bag that inspired me to finally make it, and my bag is dramatically different from hers.
As you can see, I didn't give mine a mouth. I really did like that idea, I thought it looked great, but I hadn't thought of that before I had seen yours, so I didn't use it. Likewise for the vinyl pockets, the idea had never occured to me, and while they would save me time, they were not my idea.
Yes, both of our bags are messenger bags, yes they are both made with faux fur, and yes they have felt faces on them. However, they are not the same bag and as several other craftsters have posted, they made similar bags before you did. I know that you have expressed interest in selling them, but I feel that our bags are different enough that it would not be a conflict if you do choose to sell your design at a later point.

I hope that you will understand that I do respect that you publicly displayed your bag before I finished mine. I really was impressed that you did, because one of the main reasons I had put off finishing my bag was that I thought it was too silly and strange. Your post, and the response to it, encouraged me to finish my project. I see many craftsters selling similar items and helping each other out. I would be happy to give you the stores I use for cheaper fur, or other items.

If you would like to continue this discussion, you can e-mail me at sarahsarah(at)mfire.com

I understand what you've said, and yes I admit I am protective of my design. I actually respect the fact you're going to try and sell these bags, I was planning on that for awhile but wasn't sure how they were going to go over.

I don't want to drag this out, so I'm just going to say one more thing and then this is done with. Go ahead and sell them. I hope you make a ton of money off of these bags. My only request is that you keep the name Ferocious Furries. Other than that, I appreciate the thought you put behind your own bags, and I am sorry to have caused a slight disturbance in your thread.

Again, good luck with the bags on eBay.  Smiley

I'm glad we could talk this out calmly. I understand your feelings about the name Monster Bag and I will respect that and not use it. I'm not totally sold on the Ferocious Furries. I've been going between that and Ferocious Fuzzies, and am still trying to think of another name for the bag line.

I'll try to post my bags on Etsy tommorow, but I must get some sleep now. I have swim lessons to teach in nine hours.

Thank you for your support, that means a lot to me.

Ferocious Fuzzies sounds like an oxymoron or something, I like that.

If they were all messenger style you could try Monster Messengers, but they're not. Hmm...

I finished another two bags this week.  I was going to post them tonight, but Etsy seems to have slowed down, so I'll either post them late tonight or tommorow night.  I wanted to give you guys a sneak preview.  The green tote is probably my favorite monster face ever and I just really like the black messenger bag.  The fur is gorgeous in the light, it shimmers like real fur.
