Hideous Freak Baby Into CUTE Franken Kitty: It's ALIVE!!!

Here is a picture of the finished piece: an adorable Franken Kitty:



And HERE is the Hideous Freak Baby ($2.99 from Goodwill) from which the Kitty was born:



Shield your eyes! It's HIDEOUS!!!



HOW I DID IT:

1) I started with the Freak Baby by breaking off its lower legs and entire arms:



2) From there, I covered it with foil and began covering it with rolled out sheets of white polymer clay (I use Sculpey), and shaping the clay with hands and tools to create the body:



3) After baking (I baked between almost each step), I added a wire and foil armature to create arms:



4) Then, I sculpted the arms and head and face, adding head pins as whiskers:



5) I began painting with acrylics. It was okay--but the stomach was too pink (made me think of babyish stuffed toys), so i went through several layers after this of different tones until i was right):



6) Finally, after much painting and detail work, I arrived at this:



7) I knew the eyes needed to be JUST RIGHT--so i created button eyes with polymer clay (even the "thread" is magenta clay):



And here he is! The Franken Kitty:

Alright, that's awesome!  But Lord Almighty, I think I would have been afraid to bring the "before" version home with me! Damn, that thing was ugly! It actually reminds me of the USPS clown commercial (and I'm not even afraid of clowns!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwXdSH2Co78.

That is too funny--I had never seen that commercial, but u are right!!! and thanks for the feedback--i walked into goodwill to find something for the challenge, saw the freak baby by the door, and KNEW it was meant to be

Yes, this was a very pivotal moment--i knew that if i hit the baby wrong, and the break was not even, i would accidentally destroy it, and have to find a new item to transform...that's why i used the PVC cutter shown in pic (red handle, next to the hammer) to create precision: set the PVC blade into the joint, then tapped the back of the PVC cutter with the hammer, for a more controlled break the baby was plaster, not ceramic, so this was not *too* hard!

awwww...thanks so much for the feedback and kind words. when i first bought it, i did not know what it would become...but after staring at it for a day or two, i DID see the potential kitty inside: the round little belly was the seed of it all!

I love that his whiskers are nails/pins...what a perfect touch!  He's just awesome!  So CUTE?!
