Here is a picture of the finished piece: an adorable Franken Kitty:

And HERE is the Hideous Freak Baby ($2.99 from Goodwill) from which the Kitty was born:

Shield your eyes! It's HIDEOUS!!!

HOW I DID IT:

1) I started with the Freak Baby by breaking off its lower legs and entire arms:

2) From there, I covered it with foil and began covering it with rolled out sheets of white polymer clay (I use Sculpey), and shaping the clay with hands and tools to create the body:

3) After baking (I baked between almost each step), I added a wire and foil armature to create arms:

4) Then, I sculpted the arms and head and face, adding head pins as whiskers:

5) I began painting with acrylics. It was okay--but the stomach was too pink (made me think of babyish stuffed toys), so i went through several layers after this of different tones until i was right):

6) Finally, after much painting and detail work, I arrived at this:

7) I knew the eyes needed to be JUST RIGHT--so i created button eyes with polymer clay (even the "thread" is magenta clay):

Cool And here he is! The Franken Kitty:

Thanks for looking! Comment with any questions, and please vote for me! Or the kitty gets it... Wink
This kitty is my creation...it's...ALIVE!!!

Alright, that's awesome!  Grin But Lord Almighty, I think I would have been afraid to bring the "before" version home with me! Damn, that thing was ugly! It actually reminds me of the USPS clown commercial (and I'm not even afraid of clowns!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwXdSH2Co78Shocked

Yes, this was a very pivotal moment--i knew that if i hit the baby wrong, and the break was not even, i would accidentally destroy it, and have to find a new item to transform...that's why i used the PVC cutter shown in pic (red handle, next to the hammer) to create precision: set the PVC blade into the joint, then tapped the back of the PVC cutter with the hammer, for a more controlled break Smiley the baby was plaster, not ceramic, so this was not *too* hard!

awwww...thanks so much for the feedback and kind words. when i first bought it, i did not know what it would become...but after staring at it for a day or two, i DID see the potential kitty inside: the round little belly was the seed of it all!

I feel like the freaky baby's soul is trapped inside of franken kitty! Okay, maybe I've watched too much Supernatural! Love the whiskers btw.

funny you should say that the freakbaby's soul is still inside: i just realized that the original freak baby had "button eyes", and i actually ended up giving the franken kitty button eyes too! maybe the soul of the baby made me do it! Smiley

OMG that baby was beyond creepy  Shocked  I had to scroll past the pictures quickly as I was sooooo creeped out. But the kitty is adorable (in a cool horror way!) I love his eyes they look so lifeless but also slighty alive!  Grin

ditto to what all of u said about the baby being creepy: i knew it was BORN for this contest (forgive the pun! baby...born...is this thing on?!)

what made the baby terrible is the extra long limbs it had for some reason--even before i knew exactly what i would make, i KNEW i needed to chop those arms off and shorten the legs.

as far as the clay eyes, i am 99% happy with them--eyes are hard: they always have to be *just* so...

Thank you for sharing your tutorial with us. That was mind blowing!

that's so sweet: thanks!

yes, the take-home essence of the tutorial is this:
--find a base that can be baked (ceramic, glass, metal, etc)
--cover with polymer clay (the large white and tan block of sculpey are cheapest)
--paint with acrylics!
--TIP: work in sections, bake between steps: underbake slightly until u are done; some sections will bake several times

Smiley have fun!
