you can buy glass bottle cutters and sanders for fair;y cheap at craft stores to make drinking glasses or candle holders.. I have seen humming bird feeder made out of beer bottles..
you could make snow globes, terraniums, .. dry mixes with recipies for gifts with the jar.. just paint the lid and uberdecorate.. you could .. organize your colollections.... decorate the ids to cordinate with whats inside.. or with each other..

You could paint some of them with blackboard paint and blu-tack some chalk to the side so people can doodle on them or write messages. Or how about making bottle gardens out of them? - plant tiny plants inside, (choose carefully which ones) and hang them or put them on a shelf?

This probably sounds pretty out there, but I saw something recently that made me think it would be fun to use old beer bottles as path edging for a garden path or flower bed. You don't need to cut them or do anything to them other than remove the label. Just dig a trench, turn them upside down, stick them in the ground and fill the dirt in around them. You can put them in at varying heights to add interest. Also, depending on the source of the bottles you can get several colors for a neat effect (i.e. normal beer bottles are brown, clear, green, etc).
I'm currently working on a patio/beer garden in my back yard and I'm thinking of doing this for the surrounding plant beds and the pathways.

Hope this is on the right path...
I recycle (here, glasses and a coffee can) with paper and glue...
They can be used as pen holders (at the office) or catch-alls (for the craft room) or vases... the sky's the limit!
Maybe this can spark an idea
(Oh! The smallest one was made from a cap of a hairspray bottle)

Why not make shelves out of them? I came across this very inventive tutorial and cannot wait to try it out.

My husband made a nails/tools/stuff organizer with a bunch of them. He used screws to attach the lids to a long 2 x 4 piece of wood. Then screwed the jars back onto the lids and they hang suspended from the underside of the piece of wood. Each jar holds something different--screws, nails, other little garage/workshop bits and you can customize with the jar size. The 2 x 4 is attached to the garage wall with those shelf 'L' attachments so he can set other tools on top. I hope this makes sense--it's hard to describe but so easy to make!
I love his so much I think I will make a fun one to hold different beads, buttons, etc. for my craft room

I took a bunch of interesting shaped bottles left over from things I bought and just reused them. I bought a bunch of those pour spouts they sell for bars. I decorated bottles with glass paints or packing tape clear labels and used the to dispense olive oil, canola oil, dish soap etc. in the kitchen. I have a large Jack Daniels bottle that is going to be a terarrium. I have a couple of those oversized clear glass wine bottles that are getting glass painted labels that look like old medicine bottle labels to go with other decorations on top of the cupboards.

I am not sure if this is an option... but i burn inscents and make inscent bottles... if you drill two holes into the bottom of the bottle to let air in (need a glass or masonery bit), you can hang the inscent inside by a key ring, then the ashes fall into the bottle not making a mess, and the scent comes out the top... its really cool looking too... and works really well... you can decorate any way you like... let me know if you want more info i can try to find a pic.
do you have to drill the holes into the bottle? wouldn't the smoke still rise out of the top?
