I'm doing costumes for a friend's film, and there is a character who is an old magician and he wears a traditional magician's costume (tails, red vest, bowtie) and a big top hat. We got a new wool top hat and I need to age it. I'd like it to look dusty, but I'm hesitant to stain it in case it is too noticeable. I'd appreciate any advice on how to make it look old, using any method.

Bury it for awhile Tongue I think a mix of soil, clay and gravel would work pretty well. If you put it in a large enough container, you can give a shake every day. If you think that would make it TOO dirty, perhaps just gravel.

You could lightly sandpaper the brim and the edge of the top to wear them down.

Don't call it trash...I can make something with it!!!
