Sometimes I have no idea the source of my inspiration — not so this time.

In the way of the web (meaning I don’t remember how I got there), I ended up at artist Michael Demeng’s site, Assemblog. As I looked for more of Mr. Demeng’s work, I discovered an old listing for a workshop (by Demeng) on altered paint brushes. I was inspired.

Another thing that inspired me? Mr. Demeng uses a lot of motion in his pieces — crank and pulley fun. I had to give it a shot.

The face and the hummingbird are both sculpted from polymer clay. For an idea on scale, the push-rod ends (the thingies that hold the wooden thingie (with the hummingbird on it) to the metal crank thingie) are the hands of a watch. The “tattoo” design is a combination of glass microbeads and screws from old watches.

For a better idea of scale, you can watch the video of the movement. It may seem simple, but I’m actually quite proud of the movement. I went through a lot to get there, lol. http://youtu.be/u33ePcNzmqE

SO awesome!  DeMeng is insanely awesome and an unending source of inspiration for me.  I can see him in this but you give it a more lighthearted appeal.  Love it!

I'm so in love with this, I would marry it.   Kidding! But seriously though, I'm in serious serious love with this outstanding piece of art. For reals.

At first I thought "Wow! Microjivvy has sure moved outside her scale for this masterpiece!" Then I got down to the caption about watch screws and microbeads, and I remembered whose work I was looking at. Even knowing that, the video is still a bit startling.

This is beautiful! The video cracks me up -- he looks so irritated by the hummingbird buzzing around his ear. Grin  This defintiely rocks!

Thank you, all. If I knew whose site I was looking at when I clicked a link to Demeng's site, I'd thank them, too.  Of course, the wickedly silly thing is, I'd been to the "Abandoned Art" page of his site before, but had never clicked around. I guess the timing wasn't right.  Cheesy

This is awesome!  I can't wait to grab some old brushes and start my own colony.  I rocked this.  If I could rock it twice, I would.  So cool.
I love the hair/ bristles.  Very effective morph into a garden.

Oh wow, there's so much to love about this project: that it moves, that it looks awesome, and that it's got this sentence in the description: (the thingies that hold the wooden thingie (with the hummingbird on it) to the metal crank thingie)  LOVE!

Amazing isn't even an adequate word to describe this!  You are an amazing artist!  I would love to have one of these for my own, but I know I probably couldn't afford your creativity, and I have two left hands for sculpting anything. =(  For now I will be happy to admire the skill of another. =)
