My partner, the lovely Lydiaharper, in the Yarnies vs Hoopers swaps had some Owl hats on her list of yarn items she would like, and she said she was expecting just 1 but really? If you say I would like "one for my daughter or nephew" to me then you're probably going to get both. I mean, come on, this is Craftster we're talking about. The original pattern, the one that she had linked to, only had newborn sized hats so I took the liberty of making some adjustments so it would fit a 3 year old, like LH wanted. Isn't it nice when there is a resident in your house the same age as the kids you're crafting for? Since then the blog author has added more sizes to the pattern.

Now usually I woulnd't post some random crocheted hats on here because really, they're not that special: but wait! You see all that white on there? In the braids and the top tassels and, oh yeah, the eyes? I made that!

Yeah, so while I was making the eyes I realized I wouldn't have enough white yarn to finish (ie enough to make more than 1 eye, forget the tassels and stuff!) and I was really worried I wasn't going to get it out by the SO date because when would I make it back to the Hob Lob before then?! And then I was struck with what some might call "genius" but others might call "the obvious" which is that I make yarn. Why would I need to go buy more white when I have like 5 pounds (at least!) of white wool I've been meaning to card? Dur. So I spun up some 2 ply yarn, crocheted with it right off the bobbin, and still have 40 yards left.

I really like them with the handspun, like even more than the regular white. I think it gives them a more natural, almost vintage feel, especially with those colors of pink and green I used. Maybe I should make another for Alice? She sure was a cute model!

Thanks Spidey!

I'm so glad you're happy with them, Lydia. The swap reqs called for a medium and making both of these I think counted as just a medium. Well, short of the spinning, but I didn't really count that in the time it took to make them. That was just a really great exercise in what I can do.
