I don't know which thread this goes under.   Is it reconstructed?  I used torn-up magazine pages for the color, but the canvases and paint were all new materials.  Anyway, our house needs art, big time.  I wanted to make something that really reflects our family, instead of just buying something with flowers or whatever.  So, I give you: Avengers Wall Art! (mixed media)

I found silhouettes of four of our favorite Marvel heroes and printed them out onto contact paper, then cut out the silhouettes using an EXacto knife.

On each canvas, I made a collage of colorful magazine paper, using one dominant color for each hero.  Hulk's is green with some purple, Iron Man's is red with some yellow, etc.  This was laid down using Paper Mod podge.

Then, I lay the contact paper down onto the dried collage, and painted over them with a small roller.  The roller was my husband's idea, and a good one at that.  Some paint still seeped under the contact paper, making the edges a lot messier than I wanted.  However, this is not an issue when looking from a reasonable distance.

I added some details my husband requested to make Cap, Spidey, and Iron Man look more like themselves.  They are just painted on with acrylic.

Here's what it looks like if your living room is really messy so you figure adding some art rather than cleaning up will help.

Comments/critiques welcome.  This was a lot of fun to make!

What a great idea to use silhouettes and collage! I really like how they turned out. My only suggestion is to consider increasing the distance between each piece a few more inches and lower the whole collection so that the bottom two pieces are about 12-18" from the top of your couch. I think it will help the artwork feel more substantial amid all that wall space.
Great job!

I like this technique. It is very effective. Just looking at the pictures I couldn't work out how you had done it. Thanks for the explanation.

I love this! What a great idea! They all came out beautifully. I think those extra touches your husband requested really give them that extra oomph Smiley
Thanks for the tut!
