Several years ago I made a few amigurumi Daleks, two for swaps and one for a friend, but I never made any for myself. A photo of one even made it onto Have I Got News For You when Tom Baker was the guest host! So, with the latest season of Doctor Who just starting, I decided that now was the perfect time to make myself a Dalek or two, and perfect the pattern while I was at it. I'm now really happy with all the details of the pattern, and have made a grey and black Dalek from the classic 1970s era of Who (that I grew up watching) and a bronze and gold one from the new series that I also love.

I had fun trying to get all the details as correct as I could, given their size (they're about 7" tall). The bumps are made with bobble stitch and the vertical slats in the 'chest' area are made by working round the post of the single crochet to give a ribbed effect.

They're great fun to play with - while I was doing their photoshoot they ended up dancing:

I also think they'll be fun to dress up. The grey one decided to wear a wig I'd made for something else, I think he looks a bit like Boris Johnson in it.

If you want to have a go at making one for yourself, you can download the pattern at the bottom of this post. It is quite detailed and complicated, so I think you'd need to be a fairly experienced amigurumi crocheter to make it. If you do make them, feel free to give them to family and friends, but please do not sell them.

Undecided whether to be creeped out by their Dalek-ness or attracted by their cuddliness... you are messing with my mind! Great pattern though, from what I've seen, very well explained. Thanks for... more Daleks in the world... err... Wink

I. Love. You. This pattern is awesome!!! You are definitely one of my favorite crochet designers. There aren't nearly enough nerdy patterns out there. I'm going to have to make one for my sister for Christmas. Perfect. Thank you so much for the free pattern!!

Thanks everyone! 'Real' Daleks are scary, but there's something about being silly with them, or making them small and cuddly, that totally changes them. I hope people will make these in all sorts of colours, I'd love to see a pink and purple one for instance.

These are so great! The one with a wig looks like it has a tribble on it.

I did wonder if it was Shatner's wig!

These are amazing and I love you and askjfsdkjfdksjflsdakjflksdjkj I never make things from other people's patterns but for these I might have to make an enormous exception. So very well designed they are utterly brilliant. Bravo! Cheesy

I've just been introduced to the Doctor...through craftster and seeing it on netflix. Grin. I have to say "I love it" and I will definitly be making myself a Dalek and a 10th Doctor...but that will have to wait while I finish some WIP. What yarns did you use for the bronze one? Just curious.

For the bronze I used King Cole Pricewise DK (Taupe 37) and for the gold I used King Cole Big Value DK (Fawn 340).

I'm currently making two of these Daleks (I have an addiction to your patterns, it seems Wink), and I have a question about the pattern:
Round 21 - do the back loops go in the loops of Round 20 or Round 19?

You work round 21 into the back loops of round 20. It should give a little bit of a ridge. Have fun!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who. As a life-long fan I'm very excited, and so are my Daleks! They've been getting in the party spirit and they've even got their little party hats on.

You can download the pattern for the Daleks if you go to the first post in this thread. I recently noticed a small error in round 24 for the bronze/gold Dalek, and I've corrected the pattern, so even if you've already downloaded it you might want to do so again. You can find the very simple pattern for the party hats on my blog: http://lucyravenscar.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/happy-50th-doctor-who.html
