Back to basics - bottle cutting

I am in awe of the projects in here - they're simply amazing.  I would LOVE to be able to join you, but fundage is seriously lacking, so I do what I can with what I have.

And what I have, is a bottle.  And what I can, is cut it down into a container. 

It's my first ever attempt, and I now know a few things to do or not do the next time.  But I'm pleased with how this one came out.  If you haven't already, you should try it - it's super easy - next stop glasses out of wine and beer bottles......

Can you expand on the sanding bit please? I assume great care is needed! How smooth is the top? Could you use it to drink from?

After you cut glass in this manner it is usually fairly smooth. So for what little sanding needed you just use sandpaper and a drop or two of water. It will smooth to the point of being able to use for drinking.
