I want to start an independent sewing pattern company.  The patterns would be for fashionable clothing that women can breastfeed in.  After talking with Tim Gunn -- IN PERSON! -- I have come to the conclusion I need to obtain a patent for my nursing access designs before selling my patterns.  Design patents are dauntingly expensive, $4,000-$8,000.

This is my question.  I've been considering selling the patterns WITHOUT the nursing designs/pattern pieces/instructions.  Once I've earned enough money to obtain the patent then I can sell pattern supplements so that those who already own the patterns can then convert them to breastfeeding wear.

I've asked people in my close circle what they think about this idea and the overwhelming opinion is I should NOT sell non-breastfeeding patterns first since the whole nursing aspect is my niche.  But I can't think of another way to make the money I need.

Any advice?

Have you even researched if your design is in fact unique? I would start there first.
