Has anyone painted upholstered furniture before? Did it turn out well?

I've stenciled several articles of clothing with acrylic paint with fabric medium and loved the results (especially after washing several times, just as soft as originally.) I'm thinking of trying this on my big nasty ugly couch I hate.

So if you've tried this, any tips or suggestions?
Or, warnings against doing this?

Hrm, I recall seeing a tutorial somewhere. It was a Queen Anne chair, and they painted it blue... Nope, it was a wing back chair! I also spotted this method using Google's image search, "paint a fabric chair."

I think it sounds like a great idea!  I'd love to do something like that to my couch but it is gigantic and microfiber.  Can't wait to see what you do!
