For two weeks I was in Maine at an artist residency.  It was wonderful to spend all day, every day concentrating on art with no other cares and of course who wouldn't love to do that in a lovely ocean-side setting!?

I took the time to do some preliminary work for some commissions I'm working on, to develop some ideas for some portfolio work and to experiment a little.   I tried to work on a warm-up painting every day and here are some of those paintings.  These are the dog themed ones I created during those two weeks and all are done in oils.

This one is 8" x 8" on Ampersand cradled hardboard and is a study to see if I could pull off a vicious pink poodle......I'm hoping to add one to the painting I'm trying to finish right now (it was due to hang tomorrow, but I now have until Monday to finish it):

This one is 8" x 8" and was done on gessoed birch plywood.  This is of our Australian Cattle Dog named Oscar.  I have a commission for a pet portrait coming up and I haven't had a chance to paint dogs in a while.  I figured a warm-up painting would be a good chance to get  some practice in and get a portrait done of our dog for my husband since I KNOW he has wanted one for a while now:

This one is 5.5" x 5.5" on gessoed illustration board.  It was the first dog of the week I did and I think it's less successful than the others.  I was trying to simplify a little more and to concentrate on my brushwork:

That poodle is fantastic - (well they all are but...) - who wouldn't want a vicious pink poodle hanging on their wall - I absolutely LOVE this!!!

Six years ago I'd never painted before.  I didn't know I could do this.

I wish I knew this years ago.......it would have saved me SO many years of heartache working in a job that was less than suitable (automotive design engineer).

Your work is incredible! I love the subversive nature of the poodle piece, and the other pieces are wonderful as well. I can't believe that you haven't been painting forever.

Amazingly awesome as all your work is!  Love the ferocious pink poodle and you have totally captured the happy dogginess in the last two paintings Grin

I have what I think is the sweetest poodle in the world and seeing one in full on vicious mode and pink no less made me and my hubby laugh.  GREAT work.
