I found this idea somewhere on the internet and thought I'd give it a try. I used it as a personalized gift for my Dad because he is super hard to buy presents for. Each coaster has an image of a map zoomed in on a location that has some meaning to him: the house he grew up in, the family business, his favorite road trip destination, etc. I think he liked it, and told me I should make a set for my Grandpa using places that meant something to him from when he was overseas. It wasn't too difficult to make with a little help from maps.google.com Let me know what you think!

Your coasters look great - I'm sure your dad will love them.  My dad is the same way in that he is incredibly difficult to buy for - I might try these out too.  What did you use to finish/waterproof the coasters?  I worry about the ink getting messed up with a delicious but drippy beverage.

Thanks!!
