Princess Merida (Brave) by Prudence Christine, on Flickr

Miss P has decided that her birthday party theme this year is going to be Disney/Pixar's Brave and that she needed to dress as Princess Merida.

I couldn't find a pattern that I liked (or could really adapt), so I decided to draft it myself. I've only ever drafted a couple of things, so I'm not really sure of myself yet, but I figured it would be easy enough.

The underdress is based on a raglan-sleeve tshirt, just elongated to make a dress.

The overdress I used P's measurements to draft. The sleeves were a head-scratcher. I just measured and created a pattern for those, guessing on the lengths of the straps connecting the pieces. I made two muslins - the first was made of stretch velvet (just to see if I could draft properly) and didn't have the underdress - it was a one-piece dress.

That is gorgeous! My daughter wants a(nother) Disney princess costume for Christmas, so I've been looking up a lot of homemade dresses online. Yours is definitely one of the better ones! And have you seen the "official" Merida dresses? Blinged up, shiny, poofy-skirted... nothing the "real" Merida would've been seen dead in.

I was leaning towards Cinderella for DD, but now I'm wavering...

Oh, my! Don't let my 6 y.o. see this!!! It's bad enough I'm making a Tangled costume for Halloween. She's systematically working on Disney characters. I've been doing it for 3 years, but I'm not 'brave' enough to try one without a pattern.

Lovely!
