~*November Quidditch Challenge*~
We have a special request from one of our fans.  You may have seen her fliers all around the castle asking you to join her club.  And while it is up to you if you would like to join S.P.E.W., I have committed the Quidditch teams to devote November to helping our magical & non-magical community.  So your challenge this month is this:

Craft for a Cause!  Use your crafty magic to help your fellow witch, wizard, squib, muggle, or magical/non-magical creature.  Please check out the S.P.E.W. club post for ideas on how you can help, and feel free to share your craft at S.P.E.W. too.   This item CAN be submitted to ONE class as well.  Once you complete this challenge, you may snag your November Quidditch Badge AND a Leopoldina Smethwyck CFC.

~*November Quidditch Badge*~

To claim your badge, right click and save to your computer.  Then, you can do whatever you wish with it.  Ideas on how to showoff your badges: use it as an avatar, put it in your profile under Brief Bio, or create a pinterest board for all your badges.  Can't find a badge?  Head to the Badge Station located on the first page, fifth post of this thread.

~*Chocolate Frog Card*~

~*Leopoldina Smethwyck ~ First witch to referee a Quidditch match*~

That's right; you could earn a class badge, a quidditch badge, and a CFC all in one project! Cool

@pinkleo, Thanks! I'm glad to be done. Smiley

@melissaurus, those mittens are great! I'm sure your grandmother will love them!

@jennieingram, I love the Doctor Who/HP bracelet. I'm picturing Matt Smith in Ravenclaw right now.

Yay, November Quidditch Challenge! How did I not know about SPEW before? I am thinking about baby blankets and scarves...

Class/Challenge/House Pride: Study of Ancient Runes
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Nerdy nameplate
Project Page Link:http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=416557.0
Brief Description:
Our friends got married in March and recently bought a house. They moved in at the end of September, and they're celebrating their birthdays next week. I made them this plaque for next to their front door (this is a big thing in the Netherlands, as a foreigner, I find it cute) which does capture their geekiness.

Under their names in human script, I painted their first names and shared last name in Quenya style tengwar, Tolkien's elvish runes. I did take the liberty of removing the spaces from their 3-part last name, because that made a special letter combination, allowing me to use a special glyph instead of two very similar looking glyphs, making their name one symbol shorter nd more beautiful. In the upper right corner, I painted 'love' in circular Galifreyan.

It's a good thing you can easily wipe paint off tile, because I needed many attempts for most of the letters in our human script, to get them somewhat consistent in hight, width, style and on a straight line, and before I thought of the circular Galifreyan, I tried out a lot of things to fill up that upper right corner:
- Deathly Hallows symbol. Style clashed with the rest.
- The great serpent (WoT). I couldn't paint well enough for this, they looked worse than a child's scribbles.
- Pentagram. Couldn't get it even, always a bit lopsided. Decided it might scare off any religious neighbours, and we'd prefer it if they have good relationships with the neighbours!
- That symbol from Charmed. This was on the one hand too simple a symbol, on the other hand, I couldn't quite get it right either. Decided it might also be linked to witchcraft, so bad idea.
- Mountains as they are drawn on fantasy maps (because their last name refers to mountains). I've made multiple tries, but all looked silly...
- Spirals / curls like on the left. They looked really out of place!

Luckily I then remembered circular Galifreyan! We looked up what welcome would look like first, but that was way too complex. Love just looked altogether the most beautiful Smiley I really hope they will like it when they get it next week!

Naantje, what a sweet idea you did for your friends!  That's very thoughtful, I'm sure they'll love it.

For Quidditch: If anyone needs ideas for the S.P.E.W. style challenge, here's a timely suggestion:

Fiction author Debbie Macomber does a charity drive every year called Knit 1 Bless 2 (it is NOT limited to knitting tho) and here is this year's link:

http://debbiemacomber.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=knit1

The deadline is Dec.1 (even though the labels page says November 1st- she extended it via newsletter.) and the website has all the instructions and even printable address labels that you can use to send your package.  This year's charities are: Halos of Hope, Project Linus and Knitted Knockers.

Have a great day!

Harry witnessed Professor McGonagall walking right past Peeves who was determinedly loosening a crystal chandelier and could have sworn he heard her tell the poltergeist out of the corner of her mouth 'It unscrews the other way.

Class: Flying
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Snowy Grinch Ornament
Brief Description: Painted a fun happy grinch ornament.  Decorated with painted snowflakes and a touch of snow inside you can shake around.  Cute red and green beads dangle from the top.  This was meant for a prize for a ladies night I'm going to tomorrow, but maybe it might just have to stick with me, LOL.  Naw, guess I better make another.

Class/Challenge/House Pride: History of Magic
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Dreaming of a Hogwarts Christmas Charm Bracelet
Project Page Link: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=416609.0
Brief Description: I have been trying to think of a project to do that could be inspired by a member of the original Order of the Phoenix.  I realized however, that I had kept focusing on members who had passed on, and was overlooking those who battled Voldemorte twice.  Once I got over that hangup, it was easy to pick a member to craft something for.  Hagrid.  Good old lovable, dependable, and loyal friend Hagrid.  Who loves both Hogwarts and Dumbledore with all his half-giant heart.  One of the things I loved best about the HP books, was the small background moments, that occur between other major plot points.  Specifically moments like the Easter & Christmas holidays, when you get to see people relaxing and enjoying themselves.  I loved how Harry always noted that Hagrid had single-handedly dragged in 12 Christmas trees to decorate the great hall. (And how Prof. Flitwick always seemed to be around to charm up some everlasting snow!) Therefore, here is my creation.  A charm bracelet celebrating of all things Christmassy, complete with enchanted never-melting snow.

Project Picture:

The charms include Christmas trees, snowflakes, Santa in his sleigh, trumpeting angel, bells, stockings, holly, December 25th calendar page, candy canes, Hope disk, reindeer, guardian angel, Santa and a present, and are surrounded by a mix of glass and crystal beads.
