the inspiration for this box goes back to a joke argument my sister and I were having. she claimed my space-themed spray paint canvasses arn't art. I claimed she's an art snob. we laughed, I gave her a canvas and forced her to hang it in her room.....
so, anyway. it;s her 15th birthday on wednesday this week and I've been making this thing for weeks. it's a space themed, spray painted jewellry box lol.
I began it in the same way as a space canvas, layers of coloured spray paint, dabbed with paper to texture and reveal the lower layers. then comes shading with black spray paint and it's allowed to dry completely. then masks were cut from packing tape. on a canvas, I'd use plates or lids but this box has a curved lid so that wasn't possible. I also cut her name out of tape too and stuck it on the side. then came another 2-3 layers of black paint, and a short burst of silver to make stars.
so, the external decoration done, it was time to line it. I bought a fat quarter of space theme fabric from ebay and used that and some old boxes to line.....
I made a ring holder from fabric, a garlic paste box and some upholstery foam I had leftover from my old sofa... it's glues in to the right of the box.
and I used copper wire off a broken relay and french knitted (on a machine, not by hand!!) the copper wire to make the earring hangers. they were inserted into cardboard squares that had been covered with more space fabric, and then glued. I pegged the squares until they were completely dry because the copper wire, although lightweight, kept pulling the support squares off.
because of gravity, earrings on the bottom hanger don't get stuck in the hinges lol. I checked!!
finally, I made some little baggies from the last bits of fabric for storing chains so they don't get all tangled.
this is just a sample, but I have made 4 of them in different shapes. all hand stitched too!
ok, so, that's it! wednesday I find out if she likes it lol.
