Mechanical Owls

I love Craftster, but it doesn't seem to be as crazy busy as it used to be! I come back every so often, though, to see what everyone is up to. I've been coming here for years - pretty much every since I first got internet way back in highschool.  There are so many awesome and creative people here.

I thought I would show you something new I have been working on. Mechanical Owls. Or MechOwlies as I call them.

All of them are handsculpted from polymer clay. No molds. The only tools I use are razor blades and pokey sticks (what is the right name for those things, anyways? Haha!) Then I add a few metal findings, components, and watch parts. The colouring is usually a mix of metallic polymer clay and mica powder, and then it's finished with a black patina and glazed.

This is Bubo - he was my second MechOwlie. He was based off of Bubo from Clash of the Titans in my own style.



Then, there is Higgs... Aesop... and Morpheus.







I made this slightly dangerous looking guy, too. His name is Mendeleev, named after the father of the periodic table.

Lovely owls. There is something about an owl that just seems to lend itself to mechanisation. I love Mendeleev with the biohazard warning on his chest.

The incredible amount of time you must put into your details is mind boggling!  Each one would require hours just to look at each little piece...I admire that in your works...you can tell that you love and take pride in what you make...everything is finished off so nicely...the placement of each tiny piece in the exact spot...thanks for returning with this collection...it is so gratifying to see such a gifted artist!
