I'm in the process of recreating a period-accurate baseball costume. Can anyone identify what this circa 1903 belt material could possibly be made of? It features a leather buckle harness and has obvious elasticity properties, but also appears to be somewhat sturdy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You could try to call the Yankees museum in NY. There's no way you can figure out the material from a photo. I wouldn't guess a man's belt from that era had any elasticity in it.

CraftyChef,

Excellent idea -- I just hope they will give the question the time of day, as you have! And I'm really convinced that it stretches. The visual evidence is just too strong. Anyway, thanks much!
