Question for people who live in areas where charities only accept monetary donations or volunteering hours: how do you craft for charity? In my area (Belgium) I haven't found any charities that accept crafts, and shipping abroad is so expensive! The occasional initiative I come across is either a local elementary school crafting things with the kids and donating the proceeds to a cause, which I can hardly participate in, as I don't have children yet and am in no way affiliated with a school. Also: they sell the children's crafts, not those of grown-ups! If it's not a school, it is a church, and while I applaud their initiatives, I'm just not comfortable to craft for a religious organisation ...

I understand why most charities prefer monetary donations, but I spend so much idle time on the train etc. that I like to fill with crafting, and it would be good to see that go towards a good cause. I'm really not sure how to go about this.

I had the same question, and this is my solution: I craft things for a specific audience (Blythe doll collectors) and offer them on my blog in return for a monetary donation to a charity (I posted about this on the Crafting for Good and Not Evil board  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=422301.0#axzz2XFw5u7IU ).

So I craft what I like to craft, and the charities get cash, and the doll lovers get nice clothes for their dolls--everyone is happy! I get the word out on facebook and a couple of doll websites. The trick is to make something that people would buy anyway, and tell them about it.

That's a great idea. I'm going to keep that in mind.

I've added a few new charity links to the first page, first post.  They are...

---Binky Patrol Comforting Covers for Kids: making and distributing homemade blankets to children born HIV+, drug-addicted, infected with AIDS or other chronic & terminal illnesses, those who are abused, in foster care or experiencing trauma of any kind. recipients are from 0-18.

---ConKerr Cancer-A Case for Smiles: goal is to give a bright cheery pillowcase to every seriously ill child in North America.

---Craft Hope:  Donate handmade crafts with those less fortunate.  A new project is started every couple of months and runs for about a month and a half. Once a project ends please wait for the next project to be announced.  (YAY their site is back up.  They just finished a project on July 10th so a new project should be starting soon Smiley)

---Little Dresses for Africa: Simple dresses are made out of pillow cases, and distributed through the orphanages, churches and schools in  Africa to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy

---Mother Bear Project: dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children, primarily those affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of hand-knit and crocheted bears

Have a charity you would like see added?  Post here or PM me. Grin

---The Pink Slipper Project: To provide warm, handmade slippers to as many women and children that are living in shelters for victims of domestic violence

It's a new site for this charity so it is still under construction; their facebook page has lots of info & updates too.

Though all slippers welcome, site has free pdf pattern files for crocheted slippers, knitted slippers, sewn slippers, knitted teddy bear, and sewn doll.
