Crochet newbie - fingerless gloves

I only taught myself to crochet a couple of weeks ago, but I'm already so excited by it - I'm building up a library of projects for the future! These gloves were my second ever project (first was a peg bag - boring!) which I finished yesterday, and being able to wear something on the second day after I started making it was an incredible feeling! (I'm used to doing things like papercutting and needlefelting - fun, satisfying, but not great for wearable crafts... )

Now I'm planning to start on a baby blanket - my SIL is due at the beginning of September. Any recommendations for patterns / yarns (UK based)?
