I recently saw a DIY art project that used a toilet paper roll to create a design on a painted canvas. I really liked the pattern it created so I decided to try it on fabric!

This knitting bag is the result of the printing project and subsequent sewing Smiley.

Printing the fabric was crazy easy and fun!

I started by gathering some simple supplies; linen fabric, toilet paper roll and fabric paint. I laid the fabric on a piece of poster board so that the paint wouldn't soak through to my table.

I put the paint in a saucer to that I could evenly coat the toilet paper roll. Then I dipped and stamped  on the fabric in rows.

I stamped and stamped and stamped until I had covered the half yard of fabric I needed for the bag.

I let it dry for about 3 hours but I probably should have waited another hour or two because I ended up with a couple of smudges. I can be impatient when it comes to crafting Smiley.

I'm now seeing all kinds of other things around the house that I'd like to use for printing! I'm excited to make some more of my own fabric!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Update!

This project was just featured in the April edition of Ladies Home Journal Smiley.

I agree, it looks totally professional, both the "stamping" of the design, and the finished bag.  Very nice!  (I'm just surprised you didn't use lime green...!)

Oh wow, Lime, that is so cool!  You did such an amazing job making that print!  I don't think I would have ever gotten it so perfect.
