I made this for a mural competition that was being held in my ward, and I wanted to share it with others.

In 2011, the City of Chicago began replacing the old sodium vapor lamps of the 1970s with ceramic metal-halide lamps. While I admire Chicago’s commitment to energy efficiency and being green, I will miss that old orange glow! That was the inspiration for City Orange:

Thanks for looking!

I love your mural.  It just captures my memories of that lovely orange light.

Nice!  Is it hard to paint in such a large scale?

Ha, MissingWillow, I never got the chance to find out. This was only the rendering of my submission, and it's painted at 1/24 its actual size. I wasn't selected as a finalist. I'm kind of relieved... I'm not sure how hard it would be to paint a large-scale project, though I might still find out. My Darling Mum suggested I paint it on the building we own. I'm half-considering it!

And elderflower, interesting article - I definitely know some Chicagoans who claim the new lights disturb their sleep... And thanks for mentioning the capturing of memories - exactly what I was aiming for with my salute to the much-maligned "Bastard Amber" & "Ugly City Orange" of those sodium lamps!
