Help a newbie out, what is it?

It will wind yarn balls instead of them being in hanks or skeins, much easier to transport and if you're like me, with a dog, keep in a place where the hair will not get it! I'm gonna keep them in ziploc bags and be able to just have a strand coming out to keep it from catching hair!

Very nice! How do you like it so far? I've been debating on getting one myself; I tend to just leave the skeins as they are and pull from the center. If I do wind it up, I do it by hand (by thumb?).

Using ziplocks to store yarn is a creative and awesome idea. I'm going to have to try it myself. Partly to keep my cats from 'helping' me crochet, partly to keep the skeins and labels together when I get towards the end (which is one of my major problems right now).

I've really liked it! Its very very easy but, of course, most skeins make up more than one ball of yarn.  I think I'm gonna just do it as I use that yarn in projects instead of just sitting down and doing them all at once.  I also bought a big plastic tub and finally have a place to keep my entire stash easily!
