My older daughter has been living and working in Korea for over a year now, and soon my husband and I will travel there to see her. A couple of her Korean co-workers have been so wonderful to her, and I wanted to bring them each a little gift. We like to travel light, so the gifts had to be small and easy to pack. I asked my daughter for hints as to what they might like as far as colors and themes, and decorated an Altoids tin for each of them.

One of her co-workers loves children's literature, and works as an English translator, so the tin with the kids and the alphabet around it is for her. Another really loves teal, so the butterfly tin is hers. The third tin is for the parents of one of her friends, who I hear is going to invite us over for a traditional Korean meal. Mmmm! Since I don't know them, I just went with sort of neutral papers I like.

When I get there, I'm going to put some delicious Dove chocolates in each tin before I give them. Look how perfectly the chocolates fit inside!

I hope I can find some great ephemera in Korea to use in future projects!

EDIT:
A few people have asked for directions on how to make these tins. For my complete tutorial on how to cover Altoids tins, click here. Smiley

Cute, Racky!  They are just so lovely and such perfect little gifts!

Now who can I get to eat all these altoids??

lol!!!  I had to buy an altoid tin for the wicked tin swap and I ended dumping the altoids into a ziplock bag.  I'm gonna give 'em to my mom who actually likes mints.  (I hate mints!  Bleck!)  You can buy altoid type tins online minus the mints in 'em.  ^_^

I may have to start eating Altoids just to get my hands on the empty tins. You did a fantastic job, especially in matching the bands around the sides. Looks like it would have required a really steady hand to line things up so precisely. Beautiful work! And Dove chocolates, too? Lucky Koreans!

These are so pretty. I think my favorite is the butterfly tin though. The colors just pop right off of the paper.

I think you made a good choice on the papers for the parents as well. They are lovely and understated. I'm sure they will all love everything.

I'm wondering if the culture of gift giving in Korea is anything like China. My Chinese teachers were extremely bashful about receiving gifts but explained when going over to someone's house as a guest it is polite to bring a small gift. They said that the hosts would probably refuse a couple of times before they accepted as this was part of the process.

I wonder if it will be similar in Korea or if they'll just freak out over the awesomeness you made for them. You'll have to let us know!

P.S. Super jealous of all the tidbits you will possibly pick up on your trip. Newspapers, ad scraps, random papers, etc. You are going to make some really cool tins when you get back!  Grin

I've been thinking about making some of these for my daughter's ballet class- but I just can't believe that mine would turn out so nice. How on earth do you get the edges on the top so nice and even. Just beautiful ! I was hoping to put a magnet on the inside bottom to hold hair pins - but I like your chocolate idea much better ! Thanks for the inspiration.

These are incredible. I am so in love with these tins that I really want to make some for my family for christmas, I live far from them so small items are easy for me to ship.

-where did you find such beautiful paper
-what adhesive/glue did you use
-what did you use to apply the paper so intricately
-how did you finish and seal the tins

These tins make my week:)

I'm glad you like them, Eclecticlyfe and RandiMaehym787!

I wrote a tutorial on how to cover Altoids tins, and you can find it by clicking here. It should answer most of your questions, with the exception of where I got the papers for the tins.

To answer that question: most of my favorite scrapbook paper is made my Graphic45. I either get mine from a local independent scrapbooking store, or online from Alpha Stamps. It's great paper, because it's double sided and a little thicker than regular scrapbook paper, so wrinkling isn't as big a problem. The butterfly tin and the bee tin are made using Graphic45 papers. The tin with the alphabet paper and the paper with the images of the children may have come from Michaels. (I've had them so long that I don't remember. Sorry!)

When I wrote that tutorial, Altoids tins all had flat lids. Since then, their lids have raised lettering, which doesn't work so well if you're altering the entire tin including the lid. Alpha Stamps carries blank tins with flat lids, and I think if you look around online, you can find them other places as well. I believe Trader Joe's carries mints in a tin that has a flat lid. Using a tin with the raised letters does not look nearly as good, so try to find those flat lidded tins!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Smiley

racky do you use regular modge podge?

Do you just use it between the tin and paper or also on top of the paper?

I'll be trying my tin this weekend woot!

thanks

I use the Matte Finish Mod Podge, because I find the shiny version sticky.

I use it to adhere the paper to the tin, and then I also give the tin a couple of good coats to seal it, especially the edges. One tip I've learned along the way: if you let the Mod Podge dry before doing the top seal, you have way less trouble with wrinkles. Wrinkles are never good.  Tongue

I don't like Altoids but I do get Penguin mints (they're caffeinated!!!) and they still have flat lids. I don't know if the tins are exactly the same size as Altoids, but they're close.

Also, I was just thinking I needed to find a tutorial on how to cover mint tins, and your beautiful tins jump out at me from the front page! Serendipitous!  Grin

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the butterfly one - they are gorgeous tins and they will love them I am sure.

As for finding cute ephemera - oh yes you will!  I work with several South Koreans, and am Asian myself, and South Korean packaging for things like foods and goods are adorable with their little cartoon like images and shapes - maybe even pick up a couple of newspapers or magazines too.

Well, thank you. I went back and added some black Dresden trim around the lip of the bee tin. It just looked too plain next to the others. I'm happier with it now.

They are wrapped and ready to go now, even though the wrapping is only taped on two sides so if necessary, I can open them up and show them at security.

Very beautiful. You'll be able to find some lovely needlework in Korea, but it is likely to be expensive. The ephemera is fun though. Hope you have a wonderful trip.
