I just bought a serger about a month or two ago, and after a bunch of practicing on scrap fabric I thought I got the hang of it. But this keeps on happening: basically, no matter what I do, I always get sporadic bunches of loose thread. If I tighten the string tension, the threads immediately snap; adjusting the stitch width or length doesn't resolve the problem either.

I just finished hemming my first garment, a skirt, with a 3-stitch rolled hem--for the first yard the stitches were sporadic and messy, but after that (with no adjustments) it stitched beautifully. I don't know what's causing it, but it looks unattractive and amateur. I'm sure it's a user error and not a serger error, but I'd love to know what's causing it. Thanks!
