Ugh, shipping costs... I pay international shipping all the time because my family is all still in the UK and I am on the other side of the Atlantic, even though we all live "about 10 miles outside Worcester"... Still, not looking forward to shipping to Australia even though it's my own fault that it's going to be expensive, I don't seem able to stop crafting!

Personally, I don't mind expensive shipping costs, but since DH is paying for the postage... Wink

I just don't like spending $39-$45 just for shipping.  I am a spoiler.  I would rather spend the money on making happiness for my partner.  And, my husband pays for my shipping too.  I was already disheartened about the shipping cost, then my husband jumped me about it when I got home.  I was supposed to stretch the money he gave me to cover shipping for: this swap, the Zoo Animals swap, and the Halloween swap.  I spent it all on this swap.  I know the commission on the 2 sock monkeys I making will cover the Zoo Animals swap.  I just need to figure out how I can cover shipping on the Halloween swap. I only have 1 swap to send out the end of Nov. and 1 personal swap to send out in the beginning of Dec.   I'm thinking I need to lay off the swaps for awhile.  Smiley

45 bucks for shipping!! Holy crap. I honestly haven't had a package cost me over 15 bucks to anywhere I've sent in Canada or the USA. I'm so sorry to hear that you have to pay so much!

I used the biggest flat rate box the PO had.  I sent a lot of stuff though.  Like I said, I'm a spoiler.  Just can't help myself.  Smiley

$45 is crazy, but I've sent some that cost that much (one was more, that was Australia -> Germany and not even that heavy!)... unfortunately, nowhere is cheap from here, though. I've had a couple Australian partners and it was so nice to go all out with the heaviest items I could think of, and still pay under twenty bucks.

Australia Post is sooooooooo slow too - a partner who I lived within half an hour's drive of had to wait FOUR working days (plus a weekend) to receive from me, and vice versa. Even their website quotes ONE day. So sad Sad

Yeah, shipping can be a killer, but if you keep it under 4lbs, it's usually not bad. Even if you break it up into 2 packages of 4lbs each, it's usually cheaper.  And use an envelope instead of a box.  I know it sounds crazy but that's what a partner and I did for a multi-pkg swap and it wasn't bad at all!  We were sending US/Ireland.

Oh yeah, if it is something squishy, like mittens or a scarf, squish it the heck down.  I have used my food saver vacuum to suck the air out of squishy things, and cut the volume down to save space and it cuts the cost down too.  I remember having to repack a gift to Israel one Christmas at the PO, because in the box, it would have cost me almost $60, and when repackaged in a soft pack envelope, it cost be about $25.
