When I first read about this challenge I just had to participate!
In absence of good thrift stores nearby I had to rely on my favorit sunday activity: fleamarkets!
My first find is this Kimono thing that's labeled as small! Fortunately it's all but small:

"How much is this thing?"
"hmm... 4?"
"What about 2,50?"
"OK"
That was the fastest and easiest buy I ever made. The woman didn't even think very long before she said ok.
I guess that was an omen  Wink

So I took the Kimono apart, every seam of it! There was no zickzack-stitch used only straights! So it was easy to take apart.
Then I started to look at it, stare at it, asking it what it wants to become and it wispered: "...skirt...tropical ...cocktail..."
This reminded me of a skirt I had seen a few weeks ago, unfortunately out of my budget, but hey, that's why I learned to sew!
I used the back and one of the front parts to turn it into this (my first try at frills):

Yes, the back was big enough to make 4 panels out of it! I sewed them together, added an "invisible"(well, almost Roll Eyes) zipper and the frill.

But I wasn't able to find a matching top part! Two sundays in a row I went to fleamarkets, but nothing whispered to me!
Then on the verge of giving up on this challenge I found this last sunday:

Also for 2,50!(almost same dialog as before!). I unseamed the upperpart, made the lower part much more narrow and took away the crocheted border thing.
Than I cut the upper part out of the other front side of the dismantled kimono, attched it et voila:

Here's a photo of them together. I'm wearing the collar border part of the Kimono as a scarf and out of one of the sleeves I made a bag(perfect for towel and swimwear!):

Thanks to my mum, who convinced me that I don't look fat at all in this ensemble(or do I???!!!)

Yay, pictures!
That outfit is fantastic! I have to say, I feel it's much more flattering on you as a skirt than the original:). What a steal -- I'm guessing it's real silk, right? I love the bottom of the skirt! I also like how you worked with the lines of the shirt -- covering up a few, but using some of them to focus attention on the centre peice. Such a cute outfit! I'm betting that they both look cute with other peices, as well - jeans and plain coloured shirts. Super cool!

You look AMAZING in that outfit. You could sell that in the boutiques here for probably like $200 minimum. I am SO impressed.
