Silly Little question That Means A LOT
«
on:
July 18, 2012 10:45:38 AM »
Hi there fellow knitters! I have not posted any projects since around April and even though being I've been off school since the last week of June, I haven't touched any yarn. Outside it is very hot, and when it comes to knitting or crocheting that depresses me b/c well, what's the point? What's the point of knitting or crocheting since whatever you make can only be worn comfortably during the cold seasons? I've been stuck in this funk for so long, and I'm ready to come out!
So please knitters, tell me: What makes knitted things so warm?
Is there anything else one can knit with besides yarn?
Is there a type of way or process to knit that won't make things stuffy or too warm?
Thank-you to anyone who can help!

I know exactly how you feel..I picked up a sweater yesterday and was just too annoyed and hot to even work on it!
You could always knit a summer tank top or something....that's what I'm thinking about starting. Maybe with a "cooler" type of yarn...like cotton or bamboo?

trapped air between the fibres.

if you can run it through your fingers, you can knit it
just use appropriate needles lol.

Lace. lace patterns look daunting at first, but they're REALLY not.
also, using a thin yarn on big needles makes a very open weave.

You must not live anywhere there's A/C set so low it's like being in a meat locker after 2 minutes.
You can knit summer tops from cotton, linen, bamboo or hemp. Make lightweight sweaters (for the A/C) by using needles 3 or 4 sizes larger than you normally would, usually out of plant fiber, but even a laceweight wool or blend won't be too hot if you need something to take the chill off.

knit or crochet small things in
thin
yarn like sport (DK) yarn or thinner - dishcloth, tawashi, socks, mittens, hats, baby items (baby blankets done in squares/hexagon/whatever and sewn together are small).
Plus, if you knit the socks, mittens, & hats now, you'll be ready when the cold weather comes

You can try knitting non-conventional materials as well. There's "plarn", which you can make from leftover grocery bags. You could also try your hand at knitting some very fine gauge wire to make bendable, moldable things. Or knit things that don't get worn---- bags, potholders, rugs, tea cozies, etc. Or, get a head start on some Christmas/Holiday presents. It's nice to knit warm clothing items in the middle of the summer knowing that later in the year they'll make someone happy, and that'll leave wintertime to knit warm things for yourself when you can really enjoy the process.

It's always a good idea to start those big projects that you know you will need when it gets cold, but now - things like afghans or big bedspreads. Stuff that would take you all winter and be late spring and too hot to use by the time you've finished it...!
Or autumn hats, winter gloves, "C-word" pressies (I'm not gonna say it until way into November - **that** "c" word, before anyone says.)

I've started knitting my christmas gifts...
Stuffed animals for the kiddies, some hats, wristwarmers and tea cosies... Just small projects so I can get my knitting fix and get a gift out of it!

Oh I totally know that! My DH insists on having it so cold! Eesh! I never pack my hoodies away in the summer because I wear them year round.
