I went to an art show in DC a few weekends ago and one exhibit had lamps whose light bulbs were painted with rainbow dots which gave a really cool feel to the whole room... I want to do this for my room in my apartment but I'm not sure what kind of paint is the safest to use. any insight for this?

I would guess a glass paint would be most suitable, it works well for my lanterns.

@tyoshi,

Good idea! Glass paint is good option to paint bulb but even you can use permanent marker. Just draw and fill the color.

I've used glass paints before and they worked really well. I used an energy saving bulb so it wouldn't get too hot and melt the paint off! It seemed to give the bulb magical qualities because it lasted for absolutely ages!

I agree with "AhuraFarouk" you can use glass paints to paint bulbs, in my opinion you have to use light colours as it brighten up the space and thus give you a calm feeling that everyone want. But I am not sure about markers so cant give you any suggestion regarding this.
