Copper tarnishes.  That's it's makeup.  you can clean it in a jiffy with a solution of lemon juice and salt.  Keep it in plastic container in the refrigerator and it will be able to be used for ages.  And since this piece looks as if it has a glass stone, no harm done.  Just dip it in, rinse it off.
