My partner in "The I Need A Funky/Cool T Shirt Now Please Swap", IdlersDesign, received the shirts I sent her, so now I can show it off to the world!  We decided to make each other a shirt for our husbands and a shirt for each other.  I decided to try something new.  Normally I make a freezer paper stencil for my shirts, but this time I decided I was just gonna trace it directly from the image using my giant light box (which is an old xray viewing box, so its the size of a torso).  I taped the printed image directly onto my lightbox (after I going over all the lines with a sharpie to make 'em stand out better).  I then slid the shirt over the lightbox (essentially the lightbox was wearing the shirt) and clipped the excess with clothes pins so it was tight.  I used discharge paste as the paint and a paint brush to apply the paste.  After applying the paint, you iron the design and it lifts the color out of the shirt.  Its super fun!  The effect is similar to bleach, but much easier to control.

Now, onto the shirts!

Here is the Cthulhu shirt I made for her husband.  I think the next time I make this design (my husband wants one, too ^_^) I am going to do less of the detailing lines.  I felt like it got too busy after it was all said and done.  His wings kinda get lost in all the details.  But other than that I'm happy with it.  Though it was a very time consuming shirt to make, and my back hurt so bad from being hunched over the shirt for so long.  So definitely less details next time!  ^_^

And an upclose picture of the design which was found on the internet and on her pinterest.

And some progress shots:

Here is the design taped onto the lightbox.

And with the shirt on it.

And the discharge paste on the shirt before I ironed it.

And here is the shirt I made for Idlersdesign.  She loves Totoro (and uses him as her profile picture!) so I knew she needed a shirt with him on it.  Her shirt barely fit on the xray box.  I now know that my xray box can get away with wearing a women's small, but would probably be more comfortable in a medium.

And an upclose shot!

Thanks for looking!

I haven't seen it at JoAnn's or Michaels.  I had to go to a local art supply store here in Spokane to find it.  This is the one I have:  http://www.jacquardproducts.com/discharge-paste.html

And and it should  work with the bleach pens...does Clorox still make those?

And you can use old scanners as light boxes too.  just a bit less suface area them the Xray I think.
