My friend is due very soon, but she didn't find out if the the baby is a boy or a girl.  After the baby is born, I would like to have a "Meet the baby" party. Does anyone have any ideas for this?  I know that some people wanted to give the baby a personalized boy/girl gift, but I don't want it to be a shower.  I don't want people to feel like they "have" to bring a gift.  Any suggestions would be great!

Is your friend okay with the idea of a bunch of people coming over to see her newborn?  When my daughter was born, we had a set amount of time when NO ONE was allowed to come over, even our parents.  We wanted that time to just be with our daughter.  Plus a newborn's immune system is extremely delicate, especially if the baby isn't breastfed.  You're really not supposed to let other people hold your baby without at least washing their hands for several weeks.

I'm not saying that having the party is a bad idea, I would just make sure your enthusiasm is in line with what your friend wants.

Thanks for the advice and concern.  My mom was a labor and delivery nurse, so I know that we won't be able to have the party right after it is born.  My friend and I have discussed it and we would have it a month or two after it is born.  I am just a perfectionist and want to start getting some ideas.  It is so nice to have people watch out for others!  Thanks again.

Awesome!  Not all people are as knowledgable or considerate as you!

I think if you approached the party as a "party" and not a "shower", people won't feel like they NEED to bring a present.  Anyone who wants to bring a present is going to bring one no matter what.  Maybe if you said something like "your attendance is required, but a present is not"?  Or something like that.

''your presence is present enough''  or something like that that plays on the homophone is a clever way of suggesting that gifts are not necessary...

Are you planning on a "Party" with a set time or something more like an open house? If it is an open house you should put out a guest book or buy a beautifully illustrated book of nursery rhyme's or a photo book (Anne Geddes or the like) and have people write greetings in it...this would work at a party too but would be more leisurely at an open house...
