There might be an easier way to do this than casting on the dowel.  I would do a provisional cast-on (video available on http://knittinghelp.com) so that way you don't have to worry about the awkwardness of a dowel plus 2 needles.  Then, at the end, you can just slide the dowel right in.

i want to start making this tonight b/c i'm going on a long car ride with coworkers tomorrow and this will keep me sane. Cheesy  i do not have any dowels, so technically i cannot start... but aha!  i can crochet a little bit.  so ... my idea is to make this big rectangle and bind-off/cast-off as usual but then go back and make "tabs" by crocheting around the dowel or some chopsticks or something.  i'm using two yarns... caron simply soft and in some gray color (lost the label) and yarn bee topaz ... some kind of ribbon-fuzzy yarn in blues.  it looks gorgeous. i thought it'd be a really great winter purse.

thanks for the idea!!!

Life isn't complete 'til you crochet a uterus for a friend.  Just make sure your fallopian tubes point down and not up! No one needs to lose an eye this way! Wink

I love personal swaps for small stuff (including Hershey Kisses!)! PM me for happy fun rockin' good times!

Here is Carrie's bag by Christina Caruso.

Edited to add:

Here is a thread about how to attach handles: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=101964.0

I hope it helps. You don't have to cast onto dowels, you sew them on after the knitting is finished.

Carrie also carried a similar purse in the episode where she goes to Big's apt and finds out he's moving, I think to California.  The purse was also off white wool on dowels but had gorgeous cables...anybody have a pic of that?

You could also secure the knitting on the dowels by adding wooden candle cups or simple wooden balls with a hole in the end onto the dowels.  If you're really crafty, make your own clay beads to finish the ends.

That was possibly a Margaret Nicole bag, there are threads in here on those.  Here's the one I made last year:

Just knit a square w/a cable pattern, seam up the sides, attach dowels, and I lined it, used a magnetic closure, and threaded a ribbon through.  I also drilled holes into the dowels to thread the yarn through at the ends.
