A Jarfull of Fobs
«
on:
July 04, 2012 12:05:44 PM »
I'm currently in the middle of a year-long challenge to sew one heart every day. That's a LOT of hearts, and about a month ago I started making these 1 1/2" heart-shaped, wool-felt scissors fobs.
At the moment they fit nicely into a pint-sized canning jar; but as this challenge goes on, I think I'm going to need a bigger jar!
I've made about 35 of them so far, and I enjoy them so much that I will continue making them for my challenge as long as I don't run out of new ideas! I am currently working on a dog, a mountain scene, and a house. Here is a closer look at a few of them:
Button flowers
Sewing machine
Citrus slices
I started working with felt in the Felt Badge Swap (both rounds of it!), so with that experience it was easy to jump into this project. They are entirely hand-sewn, made with wool felt, embroidery floss, sewing thread, baker's twine, and polyfil.
If you have any suggestions for future fobs, I'd love to hear them!

These are so cute, and very well done. I'd love to see some food themes one, like a fried egg
I commend you for choosing a goal of one a day.

Oh, my, but those are A-Dorable!
The whole collection is very lovely.
Looking for ideas?
Well.... How about a young heart, an old heart, a broken heart, a zombie heart, a stone-heart, an anatomical heart, a sleepy heart, a locked heart, an enchanted fairy tale heart, a lion's heart, an industrial heart, a googly-eye-heart, a superhero's heart, a lost heart, an open-heart-surgery-heart....?
writing "heart" so many times makes me wonder if I misspelled it.. How about a misspelled one, then?

Wow, you're so industrious! I'm impressed. They're all so lovely that I'm not sure I can pick a favorite. I think it would have to be the strawberry, though.

Good challenge, and what an amazing selection you've come up with! Do you have that many scissors?
The citrus ones are especially interesting, but I love them all.

Well, no, I don't have that many scissors...but the challenge is the challenge, and I have to make a heart a day whether I have a use for it or not. Most of these will probably be used simply as ornaments, and my future swap partners may be seeing them in person...!
BirdBones--thanks for your suggestions! I can't believe you thought up that many hearts!

These are adorable! My favorites are the fruits and the lady bug on the light green leaf. The fried egg is pretty funny too.
Heart Suggestions:
1. Some bacon or pancakes to go with that egg.
2. A caterpillar, chrysalis, and then a butterfly
3. The four seasons
4. egg, chick/duckling, chicken/duck
5. Tea bag
6. If you can't think of things you could go through the alphabet and pick something that starts with each letter. (I would love to see an x-ray one)
7. You could do the same thing with colors if you can't think of something. Pick a random color and then make something in that color.
Can't wait to see more! Hope our suggestions help.

So many great ideas, Gr33nT3a! I actually have already gone through the alphabet with larger fabric hearts for this challenge, using fabrics with items that start with each letter--here's a picture of those:
The "x" was a Valentine's Day fabric with x's and o's (you know, for hugs and kisses!)--that was the best I could do.

Love all the hearts leslie, but my favorites are the strawberry and kiwi! Hmmm, how about an "art heart"? Like a stitched version of a favorite work of art. Starry Night as a heart, the Mona Lisa as a heart, etc. Comedy & Tragedy would be fun on opposite sides of a single heart. Mythological themes? A Medusa heart would be very fun. A house heart, since home is where your heart is. How about "Sweet Hearts" with favorite candies or chocolates on them?
And I just gotta put this out there.... How about doing a swap based on your lovely hearts? Either everyone makes and sends a single heart to their partner, or perhaps even groups of swappers like some of the ATC or supply swaps. Everyone makes and sends 5 hearts? It would be interesting to see what so many creative minds could come up with based on your lovely idea!

Thanks for your many great heart ideas, jennieingram! I had to laugh when you suggested the Mona Lisa...just yesterday I was thinking that THAT is one thing I would NOT be able to do on these little hearts...but I guess I won't know for sure unless I try!
There have actually been a couple of "jar of hearts" swaps in the past year, and I participated in one of them...maybe it's time for another one? Okay, now I feel compelled to show you my jar of hearts:

What a fantastic idea to do a different fob a day. They're all so colorful! Thanks for inspiring. ~ now I'm wondering what I could feasibly craft every day for a year. Hmm....
