Fabric Bowlarama

I've seen so many lovely coiled fabric bowls on Craftster, but I never thought I'd make one myself, until I got together with several other Craftsters, and we shared some of our favorite crafts. alwaysinmyroom was nice enough to bring the supplies (including her three sewing machines!) and teach us how to make these bowls. I'm worried they might be addicting!


I made this smaller bowl first, just to get the hang of the technique. When I got home I found the perfect plastic button to sit on the coil.


After I made the small basket, I decided to see what it would be like using white thread. Definitely an improvement! This next basket is about twice as big, and was done with a tighter zig zag stitch, which makes it more sturdy.


Look how pretty! I love this color combination.


And, because we all agreed that these would make quite suitable hats, I included a picture of my faithful dog Stella, who graciously offered to model. She's loving this look!


As someone who usually works with paper, I really loved switching it up and getting back to sewing. I'm going to drag my machine out and make a few more of these. I've already started wrapping the rope for my next creation.

Oh, yes I love those fabric bowls! I have seen lots of them here too, and should really try to make me one!

Yours are very lovely! And hahaha, so is your BIG dog Stella as your stylish model! Hahaha, those eyes make it look so funny! Stella is hilarious! Give her a big hug, she (I presume she) deserves that!

Way to go, rackycoo! I always love your papercraft-art-thingies you make. And this is just another GREAT project to add to your list! 


BTW, alwaysinmyroom: THREE sewing machines??? That is impressive!

You guys were great students!  I am always surprised how each one turns out so different depending on your fabric and thread...

I am not sure I like them as hats, although Stella and Cackle look pretty fun in theirs!

Thanks for the nice replies everyone. wendiek, Stella does deserve a hug, for being so patient with me for always putting stuff on her head for photo ops. She's a good girl.

I think you actually have me thinking about wrapping while watching TV and then sewing...I bet the bowls come out neater as well...I get very very impatient the last few rounds...I just want them done (short attention span!)....I was going to make a striped one but I need to get more clothesline!

Gorgeous bowls, and Stella is such a good girl. She for sure deserves extra petting and treats. 

These bowls are for sure addicting, and alwaysinmyroom is the pusher. But in a good way.

What fun - and I think the button was a great touch.  I'm not sure Stella is sold on the hat idea - but she sure looks sweet. 
  I'm interested that you pre-wrap your line!  Pretty impressive as I've always just wrapped as I go - I think this may say something about my personality.
