Ooooo! Neat! We've been trying to find ways off the grid, and this was one project I've been trying to Google some examples of. Your story is inspiring, because it seemed like such a daunting thing to make. Everything looks so nice and healthy!

This is so awesome!

I didn't have any problems with birds with my garden since I had a net up, but unfortunately afids came to attack so the only thing left is my dill plant.

I think the solar powered watering system is pretty neat as well. What would happen if you forgot to put water in your bucket though?

I shared this on facebook so my niece in NY can see how cool this is. She loves to garden and loves herbs.

The instructions that came with the pump said to not run it with no water, so I guess it would not be good for the pump (or plants) if I forgot to fill the bucket up. I have been filling it every morning before I go in to work, but I think the 5 gallon bucket would last 2 days if I did not fill it up at its current setting. I could probably double that if I turn the setting down a notch.

I guess if I plan to go out of town longer than that I will need to get a larger water container.

This is amazing!! I'm truly in love, I've been nailing holes into clothing storage buckets to make my container garden. The screened home for them is a great idea, I think something like this would solve the problem of my sage getting eaten by bugs before me! Also, your plants look great!

this is tremendous!  Can you give us a ball park figure on cost to make this setup?  Where did you find the solar pump contraption?  Well done!

There is a link to the pump in the story link in the first post of this thread. It is from amazon and was under $50 bucks.

This whole project ended up costing a lot more than planed. The screened enclosure part really was not that bad, maybe $60. Which I think is the part everybody likes. Adding the stand I built it on, the box itself and the pump and your looking over $200.

I did spread the cost over three weekends, the first weekend making the box, the second screening it in and the third putting in the solar watering.

But I originally was not planning to spend this much. But hey, I got a great deal on the plants themselfs!
