So I thought I would make my DH a little something for his birthday....

With the movie so close on the horizon I've been a bit obsessed. This is a mix of stitching and gel fine point fabric marker (for most of the wordage). I started out wanting to do a mix of browns thinking that would be continued in the movie as they did in the Lord of the Rings trilogy...but then I realized I only had a black gel fabric marker. I then mixed some greys in too for thread.

Here are some close ups of the stitchery...

After finishing I went to soak the washable blue marker away and then iron the piece as we are want to do...
I ended up with this weird BROWN STAIN smack in the middle of it!!!  Angry

After some anxiety I decided to tea stain my precious....

I LOVE the effect! I had never tea stained before and I can tell you it won't be my last time!

Now after DH's birthday (he was SO thrilled BTW) I have it up in our bedroom where I can see it every time I pass. (I SHALL PASS! Wink)
I framed it in a shadow box with pins a bit haphazardly....because what if the map wants to be something else in another life, right?

Thanks for checking out my Hobbit map!

So cool! I love all the detail, and it looks great on your wall. That map, and translating the runes, was what got me into The Hobbit when I was little.

I will do personal swaps. Cheesy
I have a few skeins of Caron Simply Soft I would love to supply swap with anyone for other types of yarn, I am finding the yarn a tad hard to work with.

So awesome! Now I'm inspired to make something similar for a friend of mine, who's a big fantasy fan and who also loves maps.

I've never tea-stained anything before either. Most of the tea in my apartment gets drunk too quickly for me to even think about using it for craft purposes!

Thanks everyone!

Awesome! Word of advice...be careful when researching this particular maps images. The initial image I transfered to the fabric had all the words in elvish. When I took out my book to reference they had words in "the common tongue  Wink" which was what I had in mind. Had to do a bit of tweaking to make some things fit. I'm sure they both were true, but my personal preference was for the one I had grown up with in my personal copy.

Good Luck and now I think I'm addicted to the fantasy maps.
One in each room of the house isn't weird, right?

Not weird at all!

Ha, this friend that I have in mind once wrote poetry in Sindarin. If the map was in Elvish, she'd probably be even happier! *puts on her nerd hat*
