I don't mind at all! It's a bit of a pain in the butt process--I always end up having to redo it because I mess up the first time. I bought a perforated metal sheet from Amazon (the dots on this painting are 1/4" diameter). I mask off the borders of where the dots will go on the painting so I can see them underneath the metal sheet and so I don't get dots where I don't want them. Then, I make sure I have a completely solid support underneath my canvas (usually by layering lots of hard boards or whatever I can find under it)--this step is important; if there is no support under the canvas, it will bounce all over the place and the dots will be so, so sloppy. Then, I put the metal sheet over the canvas, take a stencil brush and non-diluted oil paint (I use oil paint because its color is thick and intense enough that it doesn't require more than one coat, plus that's the way Roy Lichtenstein did it!), and "tap and smoosh" as I call it. What I do is apply paint to my stencil brush, though I tap most of the paint off the brush because too much paint also makes sloppy dots, then I tap the brush over an area of the metal sheet to spread the color, and smoosh and twist the brush around to really push that paint into the openings and achieve a uniform, solid dot pattern all around. It's a very time consuming process, and one that leaves me aching and cursing midway through, but when done correctly it makes such a cool result!
