Last year (my freshman year in college), I was introduced to pastels and fell in love with them. I unintentionally ended up doing a series of pet portraits, one of them being a class assignment and the other two being commissions! I have done some portraits of my dogs in other mediums and I am obviously still learning the ways of pastel. I love drawing my own pets, as well as other people's pets and hope to do more in the future, whether it be in pastel or paint!
Unfortunately I don't own a camera (can't buy one on a college art kid budget) so I had to take these with a camera phone. I also took the pictures before they were untaped and framed. Sorry!

These are amazing! They look so fluffy and real! Great control over the medium, and I really look forward to seeing more work from you.

Those are great! I absolutely love the textures you've created. My favorite would have to be the wee black & white puppy, he's adorable!

Beautiful work! Cheesy

Thanks! The little puppy was done for an friend whose puppy passed away. She didn't have many reference photos, but I chose the one that hand her boyfriend's hand in it to show just how tiny he was.

I am amazed by your skill! I though the first one was a photo you used as a reference, and then I noticed: no, this is your actual artwork! Beautiful!

Wow, the dogs are wonderful but what really caught my attention was the hand.  Honestly, I thought it was a photo at first.  You have great talent!

They're all absolutely beautiful, with so much depth and personality in each piece.  You're a gifted artist, Brenzle, able to bring your subjects to life -- I can fairly see the second dog panting and tiny drops on the end of his/her tongue, the flickering warmth of the candle next to the first one, the tenderness of the man holding the puppy's paw.

You and pastels are going to be great friends! Your pet portraits are so lifelike and visually dynamic. They really look like any second now, they'll move! Cheesy

Oh my word!  Those are amazing!  The technique and the layout and the whole thing is so well done!  I had no idea it was possible to do such amazing things with pastel.  Great work!

I love your work. I've dabbled in pastels before but it never really took off for me.

Very lovely! If your school has cameras to lend (mine did, free if a teacher signs off) it might be worth documenting your work super-well for later. I was really glad when I had to do an online portfolio senior year that I had photos on hand.

These are fantastic. I know my way around ink, a few types of paint and vector images, but I could never get a feel for pastels. It looks like they come pretty naturally to you. Keep working in them- and take tons of pictures as soon as you can (borrow a camera from friends or family if you can). If you build up a little portfolio you might be able to pick up a few jobs doing custom pet portraits and buy a camera of your own.
