There are indoor kits for growing the button mushrooms like those sold in the supermarket - both white and tan are available.  It was basically the size of a box of copy paper, filled with straw-type material.  The spores come in a bag of something compost-like that you spread over the straw and water thoroughly.  Then just keep it damp and dark, and enjoy the mushrooms.  I believe the kit is around $20.  We order from Jung Seed Co's catalog.

I have also grown some gourmet mushrooms: one that looked like a head of cauliflower, but tasted like lobster!  Very fun, interesting "gardening"  Smiley and so delicious.  It was several years ago, so no pics to post - sorry.

That's amazing! Can they be grown indoors? I want a farm...
I need to live the mushroom and alpaca lifestyle.

I was thinking about doing this inside, but heard that the mushroom logs can have a musty smell inside.

Those look amazing! i have always been kind of afraid to grow mushrooms, because I live in a place where fungi grow so rampantly, that I have a fear of other types of less edible mushrooms will get mixed up with the ones I was trying to grow on purpose. I am sure that is a silly fear though.
