So, this thing recently happened in Michigan where saying the word "vagina" caused a big uproar in the Senate and got one of our reps banned from speaking on another issue.  Well.  That's ridiculous.  So Eve Ensler is coming up on Monday night to perform The Vagina Monologues on the capital steps with some of our state reps!

I can't go.  Boo!  Sad

But my partner is going, and she is going to take these vagina-related brooches and fascinators with her to give to people.  Hopefully they'll kick in a small donation for Planned Parenthood in exchange.

The pic quality isn't great but you get the gist.  These are felt, fabric trim, ribbon, giant chenille pipe cleaners, and lots of hand stitching/hot glue.  I'm making more tomorrow so she'll have a bunch to take with her!

UPDATED: Final count.  I only finished five more today, though I have foundations for another ten.  But this will have to do for the event tomorrow.  Thanks for your support and kind words!

Wow! I hadn't heard about this until now...I love Craftster. Yay for these brooches and yay for participating even though you can't go Smiley

Here's a great (British) article on what happened for anyone interested: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jun/15/vaginas-arent-dirty-even-in-michigan?newsfeed=true

For mature images, I think you can replace the "[img]" tags with "[matureimg]" tags.

These brooches (and the reason behind them) are great, and I hope people appreciate them.  They capture the anatomy without being over-the-top realistic, are feminine without being overly so, and are fashionable.

Awesome.  I really don't know what all the fuss is about - the word vagina is not in any way offensive.

Ah, Western culture - where violence is more accepted than sexuality.

Is it bad that I want one?  (I wear vulva necklaces all the time.)

What a great response to an otherwise ridiculous situation.  As a former Michigander the whole situation made me really sad.  But you (and your partner's) response is more than fantastic!  I absolutely love the brooches and would be more than proud to wear one.  <3  You are amazing.  If you get a chance, would you post pics of the other brooches you made?  I love that each and every one of them is different and would love to see some of your other designs.  You're my personal hero today.  You rock!

Those are totally awesome! Thanks for the great idea! I want to get into ribbon flowers, and I think one of these is perfect as a central element. Hehe, people will just think it's a lily or something Tongue

Ah, Western culture - where violence is more accepted than sexuality.

Yeah, really, eh? As if medicine doesn't dehumanize you enough, a woman and her womb are not supposed to be viewed as relevant to each other? In Canada, you can seek medical care at the age of 16 without parental consent, and before that if the medical practitioner believes the teen is giving fully informed consent. If a teen doesn't need her parent's permission for reproductive medical care up here, what does that say about the repressive policies certain states are trying to pass???

Yeah, go for it!  Smiley

Thanks for the feedback, you guys.  I've made five more today and I might make more to get donations online for PP.
