Quilting Challenge #3--Scrappy Charms (Due July 23rd-July 31st)
«
on:
June 07, 2012 01:28:40 PM »
It's time for a new quilting challenge! There's been some discussion in the
12 Projects in 2012 Quilt Along Thread
and the consensus was that a charm pack challenge would be awesome! A charm is a five inch square piece of fabric, and you can either cut your own from various fabrics, or buy them in a pack. It's a fun way to play with a bunch of different fabrics from one line.
The details:
Make a quilted project using charm squares and create a new post on
this board
during the challenge entry period
(July 23rd-July 31st, 9 pm Pacific)
with pictures of your project.
The rules:
--The project must be quilted. That means two layers of fabric with another layer in between, held together with stitching or ties.
--
The project must mainly use charm squares. The front/top/outside should be entirely made of charm squares. You may use yardage for lining (say for a purse), backing, and binding, otherwise all fabric must start as a 5 inch square.
--It needs to be a project you haven't posted on Craftster before.
--When you create your project thread, please name it "Quilting Challenge #3: Project Name"
--Each person may only enter one project
As long as your idea fits these rules, anything is game! Quilted bags, mug rugs, mini quilts, table runners, full-sized quilts and anything else you can think of!
The Prize(s):
Now for the best part!
First Prize:
--A copy of the book
Modern Log Cabin
Quilting by Susan Beal
--A charm pack
--An iCraft badge
--An adorable ladybug measuring tape
Second Prize:
--A charm pack
--An iCraft badge
--An adorable bee measuring tape
Thanks to Susan Beal and Potter Craft/Random House for sponsoring this Challenge! Susan blogs at
http://westcoastcrafty.wordpress.com/
and is the current president of the
Portland Modern Quilt Guild.

There's a pattern on moda bake shop that I've been wanting to do - I even purchased the charm packs to do it. It does have background fabric... is that ok?

The background fabric would have to be charms to start with. Yardage can only be used for linings, backing, and binding. I bet you could adapt it to make it work! I mean, you could cut yardage into charms if that works for the pattern, you just can't use big pieces of fabric in the final project top, does that make sense?

I'm glad you clarified this so well - I have an idea I want to try but it does have a background fabric but I now know how to go about making it.

hmm, I'm going to bold that in the rules and add an extra line if it's not clear enough. Thanks ladies!

I think I know the answer, but can I cut my own charm squares or do I have to make it from purchased charm packs? I am assuming as long as the initial cut is from a five in charm it's ok... But thought I would get clarification before I start designing.
