It's time for a new quilting challenge! There's been some discussion in the 12 Projects in 2012 Quilt Along Thread and the consensus was that a charm pack challenge would be awesome! A charm is a five inch square piece of fabric, and you can either cut your own from various fabrics, or buy them in a pack. It's a fun way to play with a bunch of different fabrics from one line.

The details: Make a quilted project using charm squares and create a new post on this board during the challenge entry period (July 23rd-July 31st, 9 pm Pacific) with pictures of your project.

The rules:
--The project must be quilted. That means two layers of fabric with another layer in between, held together with stitching or ties.
--The project must mainly use charm squares. The front/top/outside should be entirely made of charm squares. You may use yardage for lining (say for a purse), backing, and binding, otherwise all fabric must start as a 5 inch square.
--It needs to be a project you haven't posted on Craftster before.
--When you create your project thread, please name it "Quilting Challenge #3: Project Name"
--Each person may only enter one project

As long as your idea fits these rules, anything is game! Quilted bags, mug rugs, mini quilts, table runners, full-sized quilts and anything else you can think of!

The Prize(s):
Now for the best part!

First Prize:
--A  copy of the book Modern Log Cabin Quilting by Susan Beal
--A charm pack
--An iCraft badge
--An adorable ladybug measuring tape

Second Prize:
--A charm pack
--An iCraft badge
--An adorable bee measuring tape

Thanks to Susan Beal and Potter Craft/Random House for sponsoring this Challenge! Susan blogs at http://westcoastcrafty.wordpress.com/ and is the current president of the Portland Modern Quilt Guild.

There's a pattern on moda bake shop that I've been wanting to do - I even purchased the charm packs to do it.  It does have background fabric... is that ok?

The background fabric would have to be charms to start with. Yardage can only be used for linings, backing, and binding. I bet you could adapt it to make it work! I mean, you could cut yardage into charms if that works for the pattern, you just can't use big pieces of fabric in the final project top, does that make sense?

I'm glad you clarified this so well - I have an idea I want to try but it does have a background fabric but I now know how to go about making it.

hmm, I'm going to bold that in the rules and add an extra line if it's not clear enough. Thanks ladies!

The rules:
--The project must be quilted. That means two layers of fabric with another layer in between, held together with stitching or ties.

--When you create your project thread, please name it "Quilting Challenge #3: Project Name"
--Each person may only enter one project

As long as your idea fits these rules, anything is game! Quilted bags, mug rugs, mini quilts, table runners, full-sized quilts and anything else you can think of!

I think I know the answer, but can I cut my own charm squares or do I have to make it from purchased charm packs? I am assuming as long as the initial cut is from a five in charm it's ok... But thought I would get clarification before I start designing.

I'm not normally a quilter, but I've been wanting to branch out some of try sewing a really wild unusual quilt. I didn't have any boundaries and had trouble filtering through all the different ideas I had, so I think I'll use this challenge to do that! Charms, you say. I have some sketching to do, I think... figure out what I want to do. Yeah, I'm totally in =D.

Getting my idea from my head to fabric is presenting a challenge!  With a little tweeking here and there I'm slowly getting it but I have to take a week and a half break as we leave soon for my oldest son's wedding on the other side of Canada (thankfully though they will be living here.)  One excited and a little bit nervous Mom here  Grin

So, I'm still stuck on MAQ's right now! I am thinking that my idea might be the perfect size for that! Only instead of a smaller, maybe making it a little bit bigger.....  Grin

I have my idea and I've started purchasing fabric in 6" cuts so I can easily cut out charms! I've got 6 sets so far! Drawing out and trying to figure it all out for sure!

So so excited!

Before we left for my son's wedding clear across the country, I had 90% of my project front finished.  Once I'm home I will finish that and work on the quilting.

And I was wondering if all the squares have to be exactly 5 inches, or can they be smaller than that, as long as they are square?  I guess it's the "start" as a 5 inch square that has me wondering...

The way I understand it is that ALL the fabric used for the front of your project must start in the form of 5" squares - after that you can cut them into any shape or size to make your project, they don't have to stay as squares - I hope I'm right or else my project won't fit this challenge  Smiley

^ Yep, Homerof2 has it right! It's a charm challenge, so all squares must start as charms. You can stitch them together like that, make them into half square triangles, or whatever else you like!

This might be a stupid question, but before I start working I just want to make sure that my project wouldn't be breaking any rules  Grin Do the charm squares have to be a prominent spot in the project, or are they just a guideline for how big each piece of fabric needs to be? I have a few ideas, but it would be more like an applique quit, rather than a quilt that would display the charm squares? I don't know if any of this makes sense, but I'm just trying to make sure I wouldn't put a lot of effort forward and then have my project not make the criteria....

I'm happy the backing can be made from yardage! I have the perfect project for this swap, but it's only the front that's in charm squares! A lot of them!  Wink

Ok well I have the backing done and everything kinda ready for the front! But I have til the 31st so I don't think it should be a problem... I do have a question again ... I know it needs to be quilted.... can I quilt the back and quilt the front and then sandwhich them together and bind? or does it have to be traditionally quilted?

I hope that makes sense..... I have two different things and well the quilting from the front doesn't really go with the back so I was going to use fusible fleece attached to each side to quilt each the way I wanted and then attach them together with the binding and a few well placed hidden stitches....

Ummm I'm not sure? Does that fit the definition of quilting? (I honestly don't know) Let me check with the other quilt mod to see what she thinks.
