If you're in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is fast approaching (June 20, 2012 to be exact!).  Since summer is on some of our minds, we thought it would be fun to encourage a little outdoor crafting.  Oftentimes, we get in the habit of crafting in our cozy homes & craft rooms and we don't take advantage of the beautiful spaces outdoors.  Your challenge this month is to get outside and craft!

At least some portion of your entry must be crafted outdoors and you must post at least one in-progress photo of the project outdoors.  You don't have to include yourself in the photo, but of course we would love it, if you did! Smiley

Maybe this challenge will inspire you to venture to a park bench and work on a knitting project.  Maybe this challenge will inspire you to find a sunny spot in your driveway and create a beautiful charcoal sketch of your neighborhood.  Maybe this challenge will inspire you to design and construct an awesome new landscape or garden for your home.  The sky is literally the limit for this challenge!  Get out and have some fun!

Here are some projects and Craftsters that utilized the outdoors in their crafting process!
  • One year for National Craft Month, we encouraged Craftsters to craft in public.  Many of you chose to hit the streets and parks!  Check out these photos.
  • Kittykill used her patio as a crafting space to make adorable plant markers!
  • Trekky used Sunprint paper and craft supplies to create these images.  Now that is definitely taking advantage of outdoor crafting!

Rules:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Jun 4 2012 - Jul 9 2012) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • On Jul 2 2012 there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of Jul 2 to Jul 9 11:59:59 PDT 2012.  No sooner.  No later.
  • Voting will happen from Jul 10 - Jul 17 2012.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster, or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project. Smiley

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog
(3) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

Ooh, how fun!  The sky's the limit--literally!--on ideas for this one!  I've been doing a lot of hand work with beads lately...it would be so nice to go do that outside where the sun can catch the sparkles!

I've really been wanting to try some of that sun-dyed fabric stuff. I'm sure there is a more technical name for it Smiley. This would be good inspiration to give it a go!

Oh, I love this! I take advantage of the outdoors most of the summer, and can, more often then not, be found on my deck dyeing, spinning, knitting....  What to make for this one, though?

What a cool idea!  Summer is when I do the bulk of my spraypainting of various "stuff"....perhaps there is an entry in there.  I do like the idea of crafting outside, up here its summer for what feels like 2 minutes so any opportunity to hang outside is welcome Smiley

What a great way to spend a day. Go outside and enjoy the fresh air, while creating something.

Usually in summer I grout outside, cause it makes clean up so much easier. Smiley

Last year I chatted with a lady at the pool who was repairing a quilt by hand while her grandkids swam.  Maybe I'll grab my embroidery and just enjoy the sun and the laughing kids at my pool.  And be inspired!

Sorry but here in Florida where it's already feels-like 100F (38C) outside with a daily UV index of 11 (no, seriously) it's just too darn hot to be outside, especially crafting! LOL I'll have to just keep doing my Fun in the Climate Control crafting instead. Grin

Oh I am definitely taking part in this, and in Knit and Crochet In Public day... it is going to be nearly 90 degrees this weekend, so hopefully I won't regret attempting to knit and crochet outside...

Though the challenge is called "Fun in the Sun", it does not say you have to craft during the heat of the day. It says, "Your challenge this month is to get outside and craft!" So why not craft in the evening, night or early morning as well. I think stitching, crocheting or knitting, etc., would be fun with a glass of wine in the evening under the stars. Or even watching the sunset Smiley

Ooh, all my spinning last summer was done outside (110+F, btw) at the farmer's market. Too bad I'm not doing that again this year, eh? Oh, maybe I should figure out something to do with the kids! Make shift solar oven, maybe?

Oooh, yay!

There will be a new folder/board created just for the entries.  We'll post a link to it in this thread, so you can easily access it.  Then you'll click NEW TOPIC on that board and post it as your own project thread.

I wanted to do the paper challenge but slacked off. So I'm definitely in for this one! I acquired some sidewalk chalk from a buddy, as well as a HORRENDOUS gawdy tulip necklace I want to deconstruct and turn into something, well... less hideous. So I might be attempting this challenge in two different fashions--actual outside artwork (a sidewalk chalk mural, perhaps?), and simply crafting some nature-inspired jewelry out in the hot sun. Wait, is it okay to submit more than one piece? I should probably hunt through the messages and find out myself!

Do you mean can two people enter one entry?  If so, no.  One entry, one person.  If not, please explain. Smiley

After reading it again, I think I should clarify a bit more!  Two Craftster members cannot post one entry/thread.  If you have help from a crafty friend on your project, that's totally okay!  For example, I'll have mr.sweets4ever help me stabilize a bigger project or baby.sweets4ever paint something on one for me.  That's totally okay.  As long as you're doing the majority of it and give credit to your helpers, I think it's fine! It's going to be over 100 here today, yikes. Sad  It was cooler this morning, though.  Hopefully it will be cooler again after nightfall, too!  I could have stepped out into the yard to spray paint something real quick this morning or walked out to the sidewalk to put down some sun paper designs, though.  Get creative!

Everyone, please know that we're not asking you to sit out at high noon and do your project start to finish.  The requirement is:  At least some portion of your entry must be crafted outdoors and you must post at least one in-progress photo of the project outdoors.  We don't want anyone keeling over in the sun. Cheesy
