I picked up these grey canvas Converse-style shoes at the Salvation Army for something like five bucks, and debated dyeing them, drawing on them, or leaving them as they were.

Eventually I settled on the drawing option and took my laundry marking pen to them (I live in the Pacific Northwest and it rains a lot--a sharpie isn't good enough for this, since it would run rather sooner than later). And thus, my steampunk shoes were created.

Those look like fun and you are sensible to use a laundry marker because they will still be washable.
