This isn't in my shop yet because it is still damp and I need to clean it up, but the dye was so weird I thought I'd post it.



The body is all leicester longwool from the same sheep, and the locks are leicester longwool from a different sheep. It was vat dyed in a single vat. The body sucked up all the red dye, leaving only the turquoise for the locks. It is hard to tell from the photo, but the body is actually streaked with some wool in dark blue and some in purples.

So are you saying that the vessel was dyed at the same time with the same dye and the body pulled reds while the locks pulled the blue?  Or was the body dyed and then when you dyed the locks in the same vat, there was no red left in the vat?  Whichever, that's cool as hell!

That vessel is awesome!  It's interesting how the uptake of dyes happened!

I was dipping it - originally I was planning to keep the locks mostly out of the vat. The dips turned purple at the bottom and turquoise at the upper edge (with less exposure). I think the reds pretty much struck in seconds. After a few minutes, it was clear that I was getting a split color so I put the locks all the way into the vat. They stayed in for at least 5 minutes more. Some of the body turned blue, some of it turned purple.

The amusing part is that I don't know what color the dye is supposed to be - the label was damaged when I moved, and all I know is that it ends in "ne". I thought it might be aquamarine, because it looked like that when I sprinkled a tiny bit of dye in the sink, but now I am not so sure....

Interesting indeed...and the mystery colour makes it even more puzzling!  Any idea about the manufacturer?  If you have that info it might help you figure out the colors   I am curious as usual

A fiber dyeing mystery!  Do you think there's a novel in this?  I'm looking for something to do.  ha ha (just kidding -- I have enough on my plate which is probably why I made these bizarre connections -- dyeing - dieing - murder mystery . . .  Okay, I'll get more therapy if you insist!).
