I wanted to do something different for my birthday this year and make myself a skull cake. Since it's my fasincation with it.
I needed advice on how to start with a mold. Would I need two?

I've never done cakes with molds but you could stack several cake rounds and then carve down,  and do a crumb coat before the final icing. How were you planning to decorate it? Fondant?

If you're not set on doing a 3D skull, a 2D skull on a sheet cake would be loads easier to carve and decorate. All you would need is an outline of your skull to use as a carving pattern. Smiley
