So a while ago I came into a huge chunk of air-dry clay. I'd never really worked with the stuff before (I'm to terribly impatient), but then I remembered all the things I wanted to try that I couldn't with polymer clay.

Like modifying those old plastic skeletons I'd been hoarding for months since I bought them on sale after Halloween at the dollar store. 

Thus, the skeleton mermaid was born.

I made an armature first, out of aluminum foil and then wrapped it in the clay.  If I did things differently, I think I'd do a scale-by-scale clay over top the first layer of clay for a better effect.  On this one, I used a dremel to carve out the scales, and since I'd never used a dremel before (they are so freaking loud), it was kind of messy. I painted over it with  bronze, gold, and green acrylic, sponging each one on, and wiping half of it away.  I like the effect. 

The hair, to your possible disgust, is clippings from my Pomeranian. He was happy to donate. 

It's about six inches in length, and mounted (glued) to a small oval plaque I stained with blue and gold.
